Reflection: How did understanding the standards and the pre-comp verification help you design your FE plan? How can you use your ePorfolio to help others understand how to integrate technology more effectively in the classroom?
Description:
This week, we have been designing our plan for meeting the requirements for our field experiences and ePortfolio. To accomplish this, I have looked over my NETS-T pre-competencies and also reviewed what each of the standards mean for me in the classroom and school building.
Impact:
Through this process of planning for my field experiences and ePortfolio, I have looked over both my understanding of the standards, and my NETS-T verification to assess where my strengths and weaknesses lie. One area where I find that I have been lacking is that I need to become more of a leader with the teachers in my building, and begin to assess their needs for technology integration and implementation in the classroom. As an educator, I often use online tools and resources to integrate into my lessons, and while I do this effectively, I have been lacking as a mentor to other teachers in my building. In my Field Experience plan, I am trying to incorporate lots of opportunities to provide support and professional development so that I can help teachers to teach skills and ideas that 21st Century Learners need. This also addresses the standards by allowing me to be an advocate for professional growth within my building, and also provide teachers with a healthy process to revitalize their classrooms and content through the use of technology.
Another area where I feel that I have not been as vigilant or forceful in is having a whole building usage policy. Copyright and Fair Use laws are critical for students to understand and follow, and I think overall, that it may be something my building needs a driving force on, and I plan to be the leader and initiator in that respect. In the standards for NETS-T, teachers are supposed to promote and model digital citizenship and responsibility, and that has been an area I haven’t focused on much. To change this, I plan to work closely with the administrators and school personnel to plan and implement a set of rules for students and teachers. Through these newly written standards for teachers and students, I hope to help the school to grow, and promote healthier and safer uses of technology throughout the building.
Intent:
My intent for the future is to continue building my breadth of field experiences to best serve my classroom as well as my school building and district. Providing teachers with new ideas and teaching them how to use and plan for great technology experiences is one way that I can help to make my school more accessible and beneficial to the students. This can be highlighted by the adoption of new standards for student and teacher fair use, helping students and teachers to understand the parameters of technology use in the building. By doing these two things, I believe it will help teachers better structure learning experiences in their classroom that include technology and Web 2.0 tools, and also give them the confidence to monitor and model good use of technology. Ultimately, I am a technology leader in my building, and by planning appropriate experiences for myself like providing professional development and mentoring to other teachers as well as implementing and designing a whole building usage policy, I can implement some positive changes that will help not only my students but teachers and the building alike to become advocates for a 21st Century Learning Environment.
